week 3, lab 2 (2/8)

we did mostly exercises about the things we covered last week. the three new things we included were difference, complement, and power set, all familiar though from the Partee, ter Meulen and Wall chapter though.

here is a copy of the exercises, and here are some possible answers, and comments to some questions.

in the end there was a little preview of what's to come next week. we’re going to look at ordered pairs, a structure where, in contrast to sets, order matters. ordered pairs are written in angled brackets, like this <a,b>, the ordered pair with a as its first and b as its second member. we’ll then be able to build sets of ordered pairs and investigate how we can define relations and functions with their help.

read Partee, ter Meulen, and Wall, chapter 2 sections 2.1, 2.2, and 2.3 in preparation.
